Time on the Job
Falkville is about 14 miles out from our shop in Decatur, which is enough distance that we plan the trip instead of swinging by between other calls. That doesn't change what the job itself takes once we're there - pulling worn rollers and setting new ones is the same bench work whether we're 2 miles out or 14. What it does mean is we try to get a clear description of the noise and the door's age before we load the truck, so we bring the right roller type and don't make a second trip for a part. A straight roller swap on a double door, once we're on site, is a same-visit job, not an overnight one.
We also ask about the door's full behavior, not just the rollers, because a trip this far out is wasted if the real problem is a spring or a bent track and we only brought roller stock. Falkville homes we've looked at tend to run older doors, which brings its own wrinkles - more on that below.
How It Shows Up
On a lot of the doors we see out this way, built back around 1972, the rollers are still the original steel wheels on steel track
Not the nylon rollers that became common later. Steel-on-steel gets loud as it wears - a grinding or rattling that gets worse as the door travels, especially in the first and last foot of track where the roller takes the most load. In our cold winters, stiff old grease and steel rollers make that grinding worse first thing in the morning before things loosen up.
You'll also see chipped or flat-spotted rollers if you look at the wheel itself
A roller that used to be round and now has a worn face. Some owners notice the door hesitating or jerking at the same spot in its travel every time, which usually means one roller has given up before the rest of the set. If the whole door shakes side to side as it moves, the rollers are probably worn enough that they're no longer keeping the door square in the track.
Can You Do This Yourself
Swapping a roller or two on a door that's otherwise sound is within reach for a careful homeowner - the bottom rollers especially, since you're not working near a loaded spring. The tricky ones are the top rollers near the horizontal track and the ones close to the spring assembly on an older steel-rail door; those are the ones where we see people get hurt, not because the roller is hard to replace but because the door comes down on a hand while it's off track.
The honest limit here: if your rollers are original to a door built in the early 1970s, the whole track and hinge set is probably worn to match, and replacing rollers alone on track that's bowed or rusted doesn't fix the noise - it just delays the next call. We'll tell you straight if that's what we find, rather than selling rollers onto track that needs replacing anyway.
What Causes It Around Here
Falkville's housing runs older than the median for our wider service area - 1972 versus a service-area median closer to 1988 - so original hardware is more common here than in the newer subdivisions closer to Decatur. Steel rollers on steel track were standard when these doors went in, and forty-plus years of use wears that combination down faster than the sealed-bearing nylon rollers that came later.
Our winters put cold-moderate stress on that old hardware too - grease thickens, steel contracts slightly, and a roller that was already worn gets noisier and stiffer until it binds or seizes. None of that is unique to any one house; it's just what happens to doors this age in this climate when nobody's swapped the rollers yet.
Getting It Booked In
Since we're coming from Decatur, we schedule Falkville roller jobs rather than treating them as a drop-in stop
So tell us when you call whether the door is making noise, sticking at one point in the track, or shaking as it runs - that helps us bring the right rollers the first trip. If you know roughly when the house was built, mention that too; on a 1972-era door we're expecting steel rollers and older track, and that changes what we load.
We cover Falkville as part of our regular service area out of Decatur
Same as the roller-replacement work we do closer to home - see our general roller replacement page for how we approach the job itself.
